The story appears simple on the surface, but is revealed, especially after multiple viewings, as more multi-layered and textured than Cassavetes at his best. Ostensibly it concerns a 14-year old Catholic girl, Wynne (Agutter) growing up in this post-modern wasteland, who develops a crush on her much older adoptive brother (Marshall)- a crush which perversely deepens and grows into infatuation once she starts to believe he is the local sex killer. This is in itself an idea that makes you sit up and jolt, but as the narrative develops, it continues not necessarily along a linear path but in several confusing and fascinating directions: the family's history, (detailed effectively in chilling flashback during an improvised seance) is a chequered one, and has suffered at least one major relocation and upheaval in the last ten years. At the crux, however, it's the depiction of socialal changes that make I Start Counting so fascinating and elevate its language far beyond the confines of the standard horror film. The major subtext- that teenage girls were maturing more quickly than before, and developing full sexual and romantic appetites (even if in thought rather than deed) but were not possessed of enough discretion to make the right choices- was a step forward for a genre in which its young females had previously been portrayed as bimbo victims (Cover Girl Killer and The Night Caller spring to mind), but not one that all viewers would necessarily agree with. But most striking of all, and possibly the most enduring image which the viewer will take away with them, is of the masterful symbolism with which director Greene invests every shot. Every inch of the Kinch family's world- their house, their walls, their TV, Agutters underwear, bedroom furniture and toys, Sutcliffe's clothes, Marshalls van, the local Catholic church, their town centre, their record shop) - is painted a bright, scintillating white- a white which, by inference, is slowly becoming smudged and corrupted with the dirt of the outside world. White also symbolises, of course, purity and innocence (two qualities Catholic schoolgirls are supposed to hold dear), and it is into this world of innocence that the ever-present red bus (a symbol of violation and penetration), conducted by the lecherous yet similarly juvenile Simon Ward, makes regular journeys. The allegory is further expanded in one scene where Agutter believes she sees the Christ figure in church weeping blood: by the time we acknowledge it, its gone, but the seed has already been planted. Rarely in a genre production has the use of colour and background been so important or effective in creating a uniformity of mood. I Start Counting is as near-perfect an end to a decade as one could hope for, and exactly the kind of film people should be making now- which is, of course, exactly why they never will.     近些年自《怪奇物语》以来，少年冒险恐怖片开始蓬勃。《84年夏天》《恐惧街》《无辜者》《冥房》层出不穷。可惜我一部都看不上，特别是这部，鼓励勇敢无畏确实是应该给孩子传输的思想，但是面临实力悬殊且残忍变态的凶手，你可否想过这样做，大概率失败的后果。《八四年夏天》明显比这部深刻且有意义。现在老美拍这种不痛不痒的复古恐怖片饱和了，真不如去看看老片《猛鬼街》《鬼追人》《阶梯下的恶魔》原汁原味，最起码说教意味不那么浓，并非所有的同童年回忆，都只是普通意义上，为无聊的生活乐趣的冒险，记忆是会欺骗人的

    小孩都蛮好的，伊森霍克也不错。但故事有框架但核心不够有力，可以一看。

    有点险恶的影子，但相比之下还是差了，拍的有点商业化。其实故事我很喜欢，总觉得剧情可以拓展更多（不过可能因为涉及儿童谋杀不好拍出来），而不是用一惊一乍的音乐来吓人，还有就是Ethan扮演的变态到底为什么要绑架谋杀小男孩啊，童年阴影之类的，到最后什么背景都没交代就被反杀了…btw最后主角反杀的时候我旁边一黑哥在那叫好：“Yeah! Right! Hit that motherfucker!” 笑死我了

    太普通也太平淡了，甚至都不肯解释解释通灵的背景，怎么美国佬这么喜欢看儿童失踪故事？和登子一样人均炼铜癖？

    2022-106 孩童视角的恐怖故事，梦回童年的《鸡皮疙瘩》。最后robin的告白真是哭死人了，不过电影还可以更厚重更丰盈。

    老金头一家人都很擅长写善良勇敢男孩斗坏人的故事，非常地伴我同行/小丑回魂甚至肖申克，几个桥段看得眼湿湿。缺点也很明显，凶手太扁平，故事和桥段太简单，背景故事完全可以再丰富一点。气氛塑造很不错，而且这也是一封写给nerd的情书。很值得看。

    当然这是一个勇敢男孩的自我救赎的故事，问题是这种技法用在这样的囚禁类型片中与感情的烘托又有点显得格格不入。另外导演的配乐太烂了。。。
