The story appears simple on the surface, but is revealed, especially after multiple viewings, as more multi-layered and textured than Cassavetes at his best. Ostensibly it concerns a 14-year old Catholic girl, Wynne (Agutter) growing up in this post-modern wasteland, who develops a crush on her much older adoptive brother (Marshall)- a crush which perversely deepens and grows into infatuation once she starts to believe he is the local sex killer. This is in itself an idea that makes you sit up and jolt, but as the narrative develops, it continues not necessarily along a linear path but in several confusing and fascinating directions: the family's history, (detailed effectively in chilling flashback during an improvised seance) is a chequered one, and has suffered at least one major relocation and upheaval in the last ten years. At the crux, however, it's the depiction of socialal changes that make I Start Counting so fascinating and elevate its language far beyond the confines of the standard horror film. The major subtext- that teenage girls were maturing more quickly than before, and developing full sexual and romantic appetites (even if in thought rather than deed) but were not possessed of enough discretion to make the right choices- was a step forward for a genre in which its young females had previously been portrayed as bimbo victims (Cover Girl Killer and The Night Caller spring to mind), but not one that all viewers would necessarily agree with. But most striking of all, and possibly the most enduring image which the viewer will take away with them, is of the masterful symbolism with which director Greene invests every shot. Every inch of the Kinch family's world- their house, their walls, their TV, Agutters underwear, bedroom furniture and toys, Sutcliffe's clothes, Marshalls van, the local Catholic church, their town centre, their record shop) - is painted a bright, scintillating white- a white which, by inference, is slowly becoming smudged and corrupted with the dirt of the outside world. White also symbolises, of course, purity and innocence (two qualities Catholic schoolgirls are supposed to hold dear), and it is into this world of innocence that the ever-present red bus (a symbol of violation and penetration), conducted by the lecherous yet similarly juvenile Simon Ward, makes regular journeys. The allegory is further expanded in one scene where Agutter believes she sees the Christ figure in church weeping blood: by the time we acknowledge it, its gone, but the seed has already been planted. Rarely in a genre production has the use of colour and background been so important or effective in creating a uniformity of mood. I Start Counting is as near-perfect an end to a decade as one could hope for, and exactly the kind of film people should be making now- which is, of course, exactly why they never will. 改编自巴尔扎克的半自传同名小说，《人间喜剧》里比较有价值的作品之一，只节选了青年诗人Lucien的部分，最让人惊讶的是这个描写在十九世纪法国巴黎党派倾轧、文坛腐败的恶劣风气下人性迷失理想破灭的故事，到今天仍然具有普世意义，“文学滋养幻想”，浮华资本又使其最终幻灭。电影本身旁白过多破坏了一些文学性，主角的颜值都很高，好久不见泽维尔·多兰演戏了。
纸醉金迷，追名逐利，高坛跌落的故事，这样的故事又数不胜数。圈子里的人卷在其中，你方唱罢我登场。吕西安获贵妇青睐，但想平步挤入巴黎上流圈也只是痴人说梦。影片进展了半小时，至此变得有趣，节奏也快了起来。侯爵夫人、小报主编、剧场唱衰者、造星演员、市侩出版商，逐渐登场，几方势力你来我往，搅动着城市的风云。小报盛行的年代，报纸不再开明，而是煽动意见，记者们成了语言的零售商。几句旁白，鞭辟入里。轮转印刷机使发行量倍增，广告商业蒸蒸日上，向读者们兜售他们本不需要的东西，几个镜头足以表现当时的风潮。影片侧写了媒体初兴，野蛮拉拢的时代，却又仿佛直指当下。片尾字幕，幻灭之后，寻找内在力量。
「墓地的价格令人望而却步，因为房地产投机甚至扩大到了墓地行业。即使永恒的安眠也是要钱的。」

如果读过原著，可能就看不下去。主要展现了19世纪巴黎新闻业的虚假以及人不可能实现阶级跨越。最感动的是贵族夫人从始至终对Lucien的欣赏与爱慕。
不愧是巴尔扎克超越时代的作品，电影的改编使其对新闻界的批评更为集中化。在这个网红遍地，附庸风雅，趋炎附势，理想幻灭的世界里，如今依旧有现实意义。
这让我突然又想起了《燃烧女子的肖像》来，二者都用到了维瓦尔第的四季小提琴协奏曲，区别在于烧女图是将全片的情绪积压在最后来以配乐的方式而爆发出来，但幻灭又不那么强烈，他更多的是以小提琴协奏曲的激烈情绪表达主角处境的剧烈震动，再然后带给观众较为饱满的情绪表达。两者用法完全不同，但这并不影响他们各自在配乐上的优秀。
我倒是挺想看到吕西安的失败，但是卡洛琳有点无辜，整部剧略拖沓

没有看过原著也没有怎么看过法国年代剧并且没有完全听懂，但觉得还不错！

大学时看过巴尔扎克小说,首次看改编的电影,整体中规中矩,忠实于原著,制作精良,摄影场景服装美术都很到位,男主选的不错,两位侯爵夫人太丑。本片和红与黑异曲同工,讲的是宿命,富贵荣华,功名利禄都是浮华,一切都是过眼烟云,只有文学和艺术永存。对19世纪报纸杂志运行内幕揭示令人大开眼界。最糟糕的是从头到尾喋喋不休的旁白,导演,电影是用影像说话,怎么搞成播放电子书了!7.6
改编自同名的著名长篇小说，十分值得一看。四星。
画面美，精致，演员很有特色。就听懂一半吧，好歹大概看懂了。Louise和Coralie对Lucien的爱情都很纯粹，但他还是悲剧了。没太懂为啥他要坚持冠母亲的姓，可能我漏听了关键信息，有缘会找原著来看。

220721 住院期间第一部电影。没有看过原著，拍出来的剧情比《红与黑》要吸引人。惊讶于当时贵族的阅读量，原来人真的可以看这么多份报纸。。。。
本来《幻灭》原作的主题是：我们在奋斗的过程中，怎么面对利益与道德产生的矛盾🤔。电影版就把矛盾问题解决了。对的，他们直接……不提道德了🤔，反而补上了几场露骨的场面😌。我被辣眼睛了😌。心疼巴尔扎克😭……更心疼我用15欧买来的票😭。
